Racial Discrimination: just made by white man?
Nowadays, we usually hear about some news about racial discrimination, and when we refer to this topic, we usually think of some white men’s bad attitude to black men. But is this true about the fact? Maybe there are more races have something to do this problem, or this is not just a unidirectional influence. On the other hand, why we think the racial discrimination usually happened in western countries? In fact, that also happened in Eastern countries and even in Taiwan.
I still remember that when I was a child, I felt shame about my dark skin. I did not like it because some of my classmates also laugh at me by this thing. However, the reasons why we do not like dark skin, I still can not find the answers until now, but I do not cared about this thing, because I realize it would not affected me anything about my life. Once I talked with a Guatemala’s people, he said that dark skin is beautiful. Nevertheless, I want to ask why even little Taiwanese children care about the color of skin? Is there something wrong about Taiwanese values?
However, when we observe the streets in Taiwan, we can see many foreign workers from southeastern Asia whom Taiwanese do not like to approach to. The value seems not to be changed even when children become adults. Therefore, we could know that this problem is not a single event but worldwide one and has nothing to do with age and time. Besides, in the movie “ Crash “, we can learn that different races have mistrust each other although they have no bad intention to each other, but this misunderstanding has brought about a lot of tragedies. Thus, we can say that this obstacle is built by each race’s inner fear.
On the other hand, why some immigrants feel discriminated? Is that true? Or the reason is that immigrants did not adapt themselves in a new condition? Or they have culture shock? Or they have not received the new identity in the new condition? These questions make me want to interview some immigrants in Taiwan or some emigrants from Taiwan to other countries.
Cultural (or culture) shock is a multifaceted experience resulting from numerous stressors occurring in contact with a different culture.(Michael Winkelman) And If immigrants are not able to adapt to new environment, they maybe has some psychological and physiological reactions that caused by culture shock. When psychological and physiological systems interact, both of them will be ill. Culture adaption should depend on personal tolerance to cross-culture. Your willingness to learn new culture is also important. Because ambiguity is major reason resulting in stress, learning how to accept ambiguity is a way to adapt yourselves to new environment but you do not need to abandon your identity.
I have same symptom as he mentions when I transferred to another school only from one city to another city. I was easier to become disappointed and get sick during the time I have not adopted to the new condition. Maybe also that is the first time I changed my life style, so I needed to take long time to change my attitude. Once I used to expose myself to new environment, I can deal with this problem easier.
In addition, I also interview an exchanged student, Monica, who comes from Paraguay. She says that she feels Taiwanese are kind to her, but the boys are too shy.
Besides, she thinks Taiwan is a so democratic country that she can speak her ideas freely. However, there is a phenomenon that Monica could not get used to when she in the college of Taiwan at previous six months. The phenomenon is that the high school students are so hard to study, but college students indulge in a lot of groups, but in her country, the situation is opposite. Thus, she be confused what she should do at first time, but know she know how to strike the balance.
I also have another interview with my high school classmate, Shawn, who studies aboard in Japan. He told me that Japanese have high national consciousness. Sometimes, when he asks Japanese to repeat the sentences he does not know, they probably don’t speak again. Thus, he sometimes pretends Japanese so that he would not be hurt by their ignorance. Besides, he thinks that in Japanese eyes’, Taiwanese is a race that does not say their ideas powerfully.
Besides, there is a strange phenomenon that no matter in schools of Taiwan or other foreign countries, the people of same countries would gather up, although one of the main ideas of studying aboard is making foreign friends. What is the reason of this phenomenon? Maybe because each one has no courage to be familiar with other races and refuse to open their minds, they choose to get along with the friends coming from the same place so that they have companions who face the same difficulties like themselves. In addition, same language in the foreign country will be warmer when they are in unfamiliar place. Thus, they have less and less opportunities to deal with foreigners, and once the dispute happened, the results would be bad.
Maybe sometimes local’s behavior would not harm immigrants on purpose, locals just behave depending on the mode or thinking of their country, and that usually makes immigrants confused and compressed because they have not got used to local’s life. Moreover, too many indefinite things make them confuse about their identity. They do not know which one is right or which one is wrong, so they lose courage and feel themselves so powerless that they choose to be silent and do not strive for their rights.
If a whole family immigrates to another foreign country, family members will affect each other. Because many our ways of thinking and our habits are developed in family, if our new behaviors are agreed by family members, the new social identity in their new environment would be less pressure on them. On the other hand, if an immigrant just comes to foreign countries alone, the supports of his or her family members are also essential. That will make immigrants be brave or be timid.
Personal confidence is important, too. Take Obama for example. Because of election of American president, the questions of racial identity are also mentioned. However, when we see the result of this election, we can know people do not care about what race he belongs to, but focus on what his characteristics suit with the position of American president. On the other hand, when this new half-black President won this election, we can know that people now can accept different ideas from different races. This is also a symbol of progress.
Sometimes, the reasons resulting in discrimination is not the person’s faults but the wrong government’s policies. Some countries do not set good policy, so too many foreigners come there, but there is not enough job opportunities provided for them and locals. Therefore some locals began to hate foreign labors because they think that foreign labors occupy their jobs. Moreover, some foreign labors who live in a bad environment due to the employ’s exploits sometimes are misunderstood as a low level people. The government should establish perfect laws or related organizations to protect foreigners’ rights so that there would be less disputation between locals and foreign labors. Sometimes, the conflicts between two races are not caused by racialism but by social problems, and we should not argue which one is right, locals or immigrants, because at times, policy has an influential role in modern society.
In addition, the government should set an organization to provide immigrants and locals to communicate each other. For example, some days ago, I have interview a denizen bride in the New Immigrant Center for Learning in Ping-Jen, Taiyuan County in Taiwan. She is from Fujian China, is just twenty two years old and she has come here for just three months. She told me that she was so unfamiliar with Taiwan at first, and she did not know where to go and what to do when her husband goes to work and leaves her alone at home. However, her life changed when she went to The New Immigrant Center for Learning.
Because she is bored at home and wants to learn something, she and her husband look for some information of course on line, and they found this place. She said this place is so great that she felt that time passed so fast. Although she just come this organization since recently months, she has learned a lot, such as Chinese phonetic notation, English, computer’s skill, and foreign dance. She also makes many new friends here, and the friends are also some denizen brides from different countries, they participated in the course together, made some foreign dessert together, and even prepared a performance together. Besides, she told me that this fulfilled life can make her forgets some homesickness. Thus sometimes, when she is in free time, she will help do something as volunteer to contribute her talents learning from here. When she said these things, I found she wears a smile.
After the interview, I change my impression of denizen bride. Before, I think they have some attempt to take some money from their husbands, but now I know I was totally wrong. The china denizen bride makes me know that denizen brides are so courageous to leave their home, and they are so active to learn new things in this unfamiliar condition. Therefore, we can know that The New Immigrant Center for Learning is really helpful to immigrants and the organization also helps locals understand them.
According to my wrong stereotype to New Immigrant Center for Learning, I think the mass media should be in charge of delivering right concepts to locals. In daily news on television, when mention to some foreign labors or some denizen brides, the news usually be negative. Thus, day after day, the news influences locals deeply, and they feel whole immigrants are barbarous, but they do not know the immigrants who is in negative news is special case, most of them even need our help.
Recently, there is a movie “Detour Paradise” directed by Rich Lee, the story tells about how difficult the two female foreign labors live in Taiwan, but they still work hard. However in contrast to the once popular actress who feels depressed and wants to commit suicide again and again, we can find that the two foreign labors are just like past Taiwanese, who are diligent in their work and pursue the lives they like. Nevertheless, most Taiwanese have lost the merit. This film narrates the lives and attitudes of foreigner labors in detail. However, the film has some difficulties in broadcasting. Because it is not the fashionable movie, some movie theaters do not play it. That just why I say the mass media do not care about the issue of immigrants. If mass media advertised it so densely like “Cape NO.7”, the issue would be taken more seriously.
In conclusion, we should find the reasons why racial discrimination would happen again and again and even from ancient to modern times. Racial discrimination is affected by many factors such as Locals’ attitudes toward immigrates, immigrants’ attitudes toward themselves, supports from family members, and policies of the governments. The most important is our confidence, if we look down on ourselves, who will respect us? Everyone should not blame for white men’s discrimination for other race, but look at ourselves and ask” Whether we respect the immigrants who come to our country or not? And, whether we respect ourselves or not? ” Do not be a silent group bearing the unequal treatments, and also do not be an obstinate group denying other’s identity. All people should regard else races as one race, because all of races are “people”.

meeting with teacher(2) (revise)
Before meeting with my teacher, Emma Liang, I wrote an outline of my research paper to discuss. I asked teacher Liang how to arrange it would be great, and she told me that I could choose the appropriate part of my interview about foreign students to support some main ideas in different paragraphs.
In addition, teacher Liang told me some faults in my article. For example, sometimes I use wrong adverbs to link sentences together, so she suggest me to read the last chapter to know how to use them. Besides, I also make some mistakes about wrong on sentence and wrong format about source.
In the last group discussion, my group members give me some ideas before I go to interview a denizen bride, who is from China and is just twenty two years old. During the interview, I think she is so passionate. She is willing to provide any her experiences such as culture shock and culture identity. After interview, she even introduced some special things in the New Immigrant Center for Learning, and even invited me to see the performance hold here tomorrow. Besides, before interviewing the denizen bride, I also chatted with the exchanged student in my class and my friend, Shawn, who is studying aboard in Japan. After these interviews, I realized that the culture shock existed worldwide deeply and the culture adaptation is so important.

After these three interviews, I felt these conversations are more useful than information on Internet. Real interacting is a great way to realize the true attitudes of immigrants or emigrants, and all of them are so passionate to answer my questions. In addition, from their experience I know that all of them are worthy of respecting, because they are so brave to live in the unfamiliar country. If I were them, I have no confidence to overcome the culture shock. Now, I realize studying aboard is not as easy as I imagine.
This is the first time I try to interview somebody for my report. If I have more time, I want to interview Rich Lee the director of “Detour Paradise” . He is my English teacher in cram school when I was a senior student. In that time, he told us why he wanted to direct the movie which the topic is about foreign labors. Maybe the reason why I wanted to choose this topic is related to him. However, I think it is unfortunately that this movie can not be displayed in most movies theaters. If I have more time, I want to ask him more about his reflection of making this movie. Maybe if I finish seeing this movie, I can write more reflection and some new ideas in my final paper.
I will improve these defects as soon as possible and arrange my interview to support the main ideas of my report. I hope I can show better research paper in the end of this semester because many my friends provide a lot of their ideas for me.

However, when we observe the streets in Taiwan, we can see many foreign workers from southeastern Asia whom Taiwanese do not like to approach to.

This essay gives me a clear definition about what culture shock is and what culture shocks is.
But sometimes I have some problems in the professional medical words.

These two authors have different attitudes to the policy of each their countries, and both them remind me that policy also can affect people's view point to the immigrant.
3. How do you use these sources to support your own argument/opinions or as references for facts? Do you quote some words, phrases, or sentences directly from the original texts or paraphrase them?
I think I will use some of my interview to support the ideas which I agree in these essay.
4. What revisions have you made compared to your annotations? What drives you to make revisions? Do you polish your language and pay attention to cohesion and coherence in your final paper?
My group members give me some reflection when they finish reading my annotation. I think that is useful for me, because myself can not find the mistakes I do.
I will see my paper again and again to make the article fluent.
5. What perspectives have you changed compared to your issue paper? Did you add your peer's opinions? Why or why not?
I have added some sentences to make my ideas more clearly because my group members can not understand what I mean before. I regard my peers as my readers.
Book Review
Our textbook which we use in the composition class of this semester is Steps to Writing Well, written by Jean Wyrick. In this book, we have learned different kinds of writing styles from the beginning of writing an essay to more advanced categories, such as literature, research paper, visual arts, and film. The classification of different forms of writing is very clear for readers to understand the context. Though some concepts of the chapters might be theoretical, it also provides us with some funny pictures, which would make it more interesting and understandable to read. Next, we are going to give some brief introduction about the book.
In the book” Steps to Writing Well”, the author makes her ideas organized. All contents are divided into four parts. In part1, it mentions some basic and necessary knowledge like the frame of writing, including “The Body Paragraph” and “Beginnings and Endings.” As for part2, the author requires readers to consider the reason why they want to write. Additionally, the training of finding enough information and figuring out the whole structure of the article are also needed. These requirements will support the topic or genre in your essay. Except for the abilities we have talked about in part1 and part2, there are many different and special forms of essays showed in part3. We think this part is the most interesting one. What this part talks about is not only attractive but useful. It offers us different types of writing to learn. These advanced categories which we have never learned or heard before, now it is all in this book and with examples. In the last part, the writer reminds readers of some errors which we might have in out articles.
The book is useful and its introduction which the author writes is persuasive for teachers and students. For example, if we do not have the right attitude to write as the author says, our readers would not believe the facts and concepts we want to present to them. Furthermore, there are some interpretations which lay aside from the articles to remind us how to use the skills we have learned in each chapter.
On the other hand, here are various practices and examples in this book, and these also have relations with every chapter it has talked of. In the Practicing What You’ve Learned, there are questions which request readers to pick out the mistakes and correct them. Some of them just need readers to write in the requested form which has been displayed in the previous articles. For examples, they provide us with practical usage of writing abilities. Take the 19th chapter, “Writing in the World of Work”, for instance, there are illustrations and comments (the blue words in the margien) of each type of business work. They give us clear explanation of each paragraph. Through these ways of learning, students can get more details about the main theory of each writing skills, and make connection between what we learned and life experiences. Following each steps the book tells us, we can gradually know how to begin and compose the article. Even still not knowing how to write the content, we have already owned a general structure of an appropriate essay. Writing is not an easy thing. Of course we could not make great progress by only reading this book. In addition to studying, practicing plays more crucial role; thus, we should keep the habit of regular writing. By this way, we can know our writing problems or bad habits and correct them. Therefore, our writing skill will improve and become better and better.

Roxy 說 (下午 09:08):

Roxy 說 (下午 09:08):
My favorite chapter may be”writing in the world of work”

Wendy 說 (下午 09:09):
that is what we present before
Roxy 說 (下午 09:09):
yep
Wendy 說 (下午 09:09):
maybe lots of people think that is boring
Wendy 說 (下午 09:09):
but it is useful
Vivi 說 (下午 09:10):
No I do not think it is boring
Wendy 說 (下午 09:10):
if you want to find a job or apply for graduat school
Roxy 說 (下午 09:10):
It 's a practical chapter to us
Wendy 說 (下午 09:10):
really
Wendy 說 (下午 09:10):
that is really good
Vivi 說 (下午 09:10):
I think it is useful if we want to work in a company
Roxy 說 (下午 09:12):
and all of us may probably have the chance to apply for graduate schools
Roxy 說 (下午 09:13):
once it comes, we can use these writing skills immediately
Vivi 說 (下午 09:14):
OK
Vivi 說 (下午 09:15):
and then we should talk about what the common merit in all article
Wendy 說 (下午 09:16):
common merit
Wendy 說 (下午 09:16):
candy 說 (下午 09:16):
i think maybe we can add some common points
Vivi 說 (下午 09:16):
yes
Vivi 說 (下午 09:16):
that is what I mean
candy 說 (下午 09:16):
ok
candy 說 (下午 09:16):
it's dine
candy 說 (下午 09:17):
fine*
candy 說 (下午 09:17):
first of all , we have to know who are the readers
Vivi 說 (下午 09:17):
I think the author tend to pick some good article to teenagers just like us !! Haha
Roxy 說 (下午 09:18):
because all of there aeticles are good examples to us
Roxy 說 (下午 09:18):
these
candy 說 (下午 09:19):
and then make outlines of it
candy 說 (下午 09:19):
to draft
candy 說 (下午 09:19):
brainstorming
Vivi 說 (下午 09:19):
I do not understamd what do you mean
candy 說 (下午 09:20):
i mean before you write an essay
Roxy 說 (下午 09:20):
discussing together↑
candy 說 (下午 09:20):
you have to organize it
Roxy 說 (下午 09:20):
yep
candy 說 (下午 09:21):
do you get it
Vivi 說 (下午 09:22):
no.... did we discuss what is kind of readers of article?
candy 說 (下午 09:24):
there are some misunderstanding ...
Vivi 說 (下午 09:25):
I agree
Vivi 說 (下午 09:25):
never mind
candy 說 (下午 09:25):
ok
Vivi 說 (下午 09:25):
keep what you are saying
candy 說 (下午 09:25):
ok
candy 說 (下午 09:26):
and the reason why we have to meke a draft is
candy 說 (下午 09:27):
make*
candy 說 (下午 09:27):
at first almost all of us will come up with different kind s of ideas
candy 說 (下午 09:27):
so we have to classify them
candy 說 (下午 09:28):
before we write
Roxy 說 (下午 09:28):
different ideas?you mean ous opinions toward the book?
Roxy 說 (下午 09:28):
our
candy 說 (下午 09:29):
no , i mean before we write
Roxy 說 (下午 09:29):
oops
Roxy 說 (下午 09:29):
sorry
candy 說 (下午 09:29):
the book is teaching us how to write , right?
Roxy 說 (下午 09:29):
that's right
Wendy 說 (下午 09:30):
so
candy 說 (下午 09:30):
so , we can put it in our book review
candy 說 (下午 09:30):
about the common feature of all the chapters
Vivi 說 (下午 09:31):
OH
Vivi 說 (下午 09:31):
!
candy 說 (下午 09:31):
?
Wendy 說 (下午 09:32):
now we know what you mean
candy 說 (下午 09:32):
good
Wendy 說 (下午 09:32):
clear explanation
Vivi 說 (下午 09:32):
I think there is some special methods the author provide us to learn
Vivi 說 (下午 09:33):
for example
Vivi 說 (下午 09:33):
in each chapter
Vivi 說 (下午 09:33):
there is a picture
Vivi 說 (下午 09:34):
and we should describe it using the methonds the chapter mention
Vivi 說 (下午 09:34):
do you agree?
candy 說 (下午 09:34):
yes!
Vivi 說 (下午 09:37):
And there are also some questions in each chapter to let us think what we have learned in each chapter repeatedly
Vivi 說 (下午 09:38):
I think maybe discussion also make us remember the methods deeply
Roxy 說 (下午 09:38):
yep. the questions which request you to pick out the mistakes and collect the errors.
Vivi 說 (下午 09:39):
How do you think Wendy
Vivi 說 (下午 09:39):
??
Wendy 說 (下午 09:40):
wait
Wendy 說 (下午 09:40):
let me think for awhile
Wendy 說 (下午 09:41):
the book tells us to find some wrong examples within the sentences it ofers
Wendy 說 (下午 09:41):
offers
Wendy 說 (下午 09:42):
and it is possible for us to make the same mistakes
Wendy 說 (下午 09:42):
so that can be useful, too
Vivi 說 (下午 09:43):
yes
Vivi 說 (下午 09:43):
I agree
Vivi 說 (下午 09:44):
and there is also some explaition beside the article in each chapter
Roxy 說 (下午 09:45):
right. there are particular comments of each form of business letter or memo.
Vivi 說 (下午 09:45):
you can know some main ideas if you can not realize by your own
Vivi 說 (下午 09:45):
?
Vivi 說 (下午 09:46):
what do you mean Roxy
Wendy 說 (下午 09:46):
you can ignore that
Wendy 說 (下午 09:46):
keep talking
Roxy 說 (下午 09:46):
sorry I type the wrong sentence
Roxy 說 (下午 09:47):
I mean there are explainations beside the examples
Roxy 說 (下午 09:47):
sorry
Vivi 說 (下午 09:47):
thats OK
candy 說 (下午 09:47):
you mean the blue word
candy 說 (下午 09:47):
?
Roxy 說 (下午 09:48):
yes!
Vivi 說 (下午 09:48):
yes
Roxy 說 (下午 09:49):
They give us clear ideas about the examples
Vivi 說 (下午 09:51):
and?
Vivi 說 (下午 09:51):
do anyone have another idea?
candy 說 (下午 09:52):
oh
candy 說 (下午 09:52):
don't forget that you have to revise the articles
candy 說 (下午 09:52):
again and again
candy 說 (下午 09:53):
i mean the writing skill
Vivi 說 (下午 09:53):
I do not know waht do you mean
Vivi 說 (下午 09:53):
oh I see
Vivi 說 (下午 09:54):
yes
Vivi 說 (下午 09:55):
what about Roxy and Wendy?
candy 說 (下午 09:56):
what writing skills you want to add?
Wendy 說 (下午 09:57):
find other useful knowledge and add that into the article while revising
Wendy 說 (下午 09:58):
therefore, the content can be more abundant
candy 說 (下午 09:59):
to support your points
Wendy 說 (下午 09:59):
kind of that
Roxy 說 (下午 09:59):
we can make connection between what we learned in the book and the real experiences
Vivi 說 (下午 10:01):
I think that the intrduction the author said to students and teachers are also useful
Vivi 說 (下午 10:01):
before we leran how to write
Vivi 說 (下午 10:02):
we should have right attitude
Vivi 說 (下午 10:02):
If we have wrong attitude, the article would not be persuasive.
Vivi 說 (下午 10:05):
that's all I want to say
candy 說 (下午 10:05):
yes
candy 說 (下午 10:08):
and ?
Vivi 說 (下午 10:10):
do Roxy and Wendy still here?
Wendy 說 (下午 10:10):
i am still here
Vivi 說 (下午 10:10):
can anyoneelse give different idea>
Wendy 說 (下午 10:11):
we have alread talked about the commen things of the book
Roxy 說 (下午 10:12):
and need to follow the guide line of each chapter
Wendy 說 (下午 10:12):
do we need to discuss about some specific points about its chapter's content
Wendy 說 (下午 10:12):
Roxy knows what i mean
Roxy 說 (下午 10:14):
ok we can talk about that
Roxy 說 (下午 10:14):
each chapter has its unique content
Vivi 說 (下午 10:15):
OK
Vivi 說 (下午 10:15):
go on
Vivi 說 (下午 10:16):
I have mentioned that the introduction
Vivi 說 (下午 10:16):
what about other charpters?
Roxy 說 (下午 10:17):
well, for example
Roxy 說 (下午 10:18):
But also a new way to appreciate an art work
Roxy 說 (下午 10:21):
combination of the art appreciation and composition is a totally different method about writing skill.
Roxy 說 (下午 10:22):
as to other chapters...let me think if there is a unique point of which I can give a example
candy 說 (下午 10:26):
ao
candy 說 (下午 10:26):
so
candy 說 (下午 10:27):
is that all we write in the book review
Vivi 說 (下午 10:29):
OK
Vivi 說 (下午 10:29):
thank you everyine
Vivi 說 (下午 10:29):
everyone
candy 說 (下午 10:29):
thank you!
candy 說 (下午 10:30):
see you tomorrow
Vivi 說 (下午 10:30):
Bye
Wendy 說 (下午 10:30):
buy buy
2009/1/8下午 08:21:33Wendy how to write the review?
2009/1/8下午 08:22:06 vivi not how but what should we write
2009/1/8下午 08:22:25 Wendy the book is divided into three part

because this semester , i've watched lots and lots of movie
candy 說 (下午 09:03):
and in Jerome's class
Wendy 說 (下午 09:03):
so these are useful for this chapter
candy 說 (下午 09:03):
we can practice it !
Wendy 說 (下午 09:03):
your own experiences
candy 說 (下午 09:03):
yeah
Roxy 說 (下午 09:04):
what you presented can be related to what we learned in "understanding movies"
Vivi 說 (下午 09:04):
and do you have another reason
candy 說 (下午 09:04):
ummm
candy 說 (下午 09:04):
let me think
Vivi 說 (下午 09:04):
that's OK
Vivi 說 (下午 09:05):
anyone else?
Wendy 說 (下午 09:05):
wait
candy 說 (下午 09:05):
oh, i think the part which mention the steps of writing about movie are very useful
candy 說 (下午 09:05):
'
Wendy 說 (下午 09:06):
Candy, what do you want to say
candy 說 (下午 09:07):
!
candy 說 (下午 09:08):
nonono
candy 說 (下午 09:08):
you can just keep saying
Wendy 說 (下午 09:08):
ok
Wendy 說 (下午 09:08):
i think Roxy and I can talk about our part
Roxy 說 (下午 09:08):
yeah
Roxy 說 (下午 09:08):
My favorite chapter may be”writing in the world of work”
Roxy 說 (下午 09:09):
It provided four main writing forms: business letter, e-mail, memo and resume
??
Wendy 說 (下午 09:40):
wait
Wendy 說 (下午 09:40):
let me think for awhile
